Solar Water Heating Facts

15% of your homes energy costs are from heating your water.
With $200 a month average electric bills the ten year estimated cost of utilities including the projected increases is $33,656. If you calculate the savings of 15% that would add up to $5,048

A solar water heater can provide virtually all your hot water needs.

Almost half of the cost of installing a solar water heating system can be paid for by your utility company, the federal and state government. Federal credit $2,000 State credit $1,000 Utility credit up to $1,500

Solar water heating will add value to your home and make it more marketable. 5-9% or for every dollar you save in a year you can add $20 to your homes value. Ex: if you save $25 a month or $300 a year multiply $300 by 20 that equals $6,000.

The average life of a water heater is eleven years. The average cost of replacement of a 50 gallon electric water heater is $1,000
The net cost after incentives for a solar water heating system is $1,600
Difference of $600
With a KWH/yr savings of 2200kwh x .10kw = $220yr

The payback period is 2.72 years

The Economics so far:
$2,000 federal tax credit
$1,000 state tax credit
$1,500 utility rebate
$6,000 increased home value
$5,048 energy savings

Radiant Barrier Technology
  • Radiant barriers are materials that are installed in buildings to reduce summer heat gain and winter heat loss, and hence to reduce building heating and cooling energy usage.
  • Radiant barriers work by reducing heat transfer by thermal radiation across the air space between the roof deck and the attic floor, where conventional insulation is usually placed.
  • Generally, installing radiant barrier in the attic will reduce heat gain through the ceiling by 40%, typically leading up to a 17% reduction on heating and cooling utility bills.
  • A basic material property is the "reflectivity" (also called the "reflectance"). This is a measure of how much radiant heat is reflected by a material.
  • Radiant barriers can also reduce indoor heat losses through the ceiling in the winter.

Solar Attic Fan

  • Ventilation promotes a cooler attic in the summer and a drier attic in the winter. By exhausting heated air from the attic, a good ventilation system will help keep the rest of the house cooler with less energy usage. In cold months, ventilation prevents moisture build-up in the attic. As warm, moist air rises into a cold attic, it can condense under the roof deck, causing the decking and shingles to distort and deteriorate.
  • A solar powered fan can be installed, saving on energy costs by using the power of the sun.
